Facebook Adds New Feature to Insights

By David Neuman, Social Media Manager

Facebook has added a feature to insights that will help to improve how you calculate and analyze success related to your page.  For fan pages that you admin, you can now select a date range to view statistics for all metrics within those dates.  This might not sound like a big deal, but it’s significant for a couple of reasons:

  • So-called “meaningless” Facebook metrics now worth analyzing. Facebook tab views were a metric that has been provided by Facebook insights for a while, but it had little to no meaning.  Nobody knew what date range Facebook was calculating and even if you guessed (based on the total number of views) it was never accurate. It was to the point where it was practically worthless. Now with a date range, the views are more accurate and you can analyze this metric over a week, month, day, etc.
  • Convenience: With a date range, you can now view trends within Facebook metrics pertaining to any set of dates (instead of having to analyze the most current data or reverting back to the old insights to use that annoying scroll bar within the graph).
  • Backtracking Data: This is an obvious one, but with a date range you now have the ability to backtrack data for all Facebook metrics.  For the first time, you can do year over year comparisons directly within Facebook insights.  Marketers will find it a lot easier to incorporate Facebook metrics with other metrics that they obtain from Google Analytics, Omniture, and other web analytics platforms.
