This fall, a new domain, .XXX for porn will be launched. ICANN (the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) approved the new .xxx top level domain for the adult entertainment industry on March 18.
In order to protect brands and trademarks, there will be a “defensive registration” period beginning in September, lasting for 30 days where registered trademarked owners will be able to block their marks from being registered as a .xxx domain by a third party.
Right now, there is a pre-registration process that allows trademarked owners to begin the application at http://domains.icmregistry.com. The defensive registration has a one-time fee that has not yet been established but is estimated to be between $200 and $300. Although the fee doesn’t seem fair, it will be a lot cheaper than having to buy the domain back from a third party who has registered it in bad faith.
