Is Social Media Impacting March Madness Results? (Updated Bracket)

April 2013     By

These past four days were filled with a lot of exciting games and upsets for the Sweet 16 and Elite 8. Florida Gulf Coast’s Cinderella story has come to an end, but Wichita State exceeded all expectations by making it’s way to the Final Four. There was also an overtime thriller between Kansas and Michigan.  The tournament is now down to just four teams: Louisville, Wichita State, Michigan, and Syracuse. The first two rounds showed that, more often than not, the teams with the most amount of Social Media buzz were also the teams that won most often, but would the same hold true for the Sweet 16 and Elite 8? View our updated bracket by clicking on the image below. Make sure to check out the data underneath the bracket for some cool insights.

RESULTS AND OBSERVATIONS:

1st Round Picks: 25/32 correct

2nd Round Picks: 11/16 correct

Sweet 16 Picks: 6/8 correct

Elite 8 Picks: 4/4 correct

Team with the Most Amount of Buzz – Sweet 16: Michigan

Team with the Most Amount of Buzz – Elite 8: Louisville

Most Talked About Match-Up (Sweet 16 or Elite 8): Louisville vs. Duke

Biggest Margin (Sweet 16 or Elite 8): Syracuse (75.87%) over Marquette (24.13%).

The Prime Buzz analysis did well the first two rounds of the tournament, but I was surprised to see how dead on it was for both the Sweet 16 and Elite 8.  For the Sweet 16, the only two games that had a Prime Buzz winner who lost the game were Florida Gulf Coast and Miami (FL). Florida Gulf Coast were likely going to win the Prime Buzz analysis no matter who they were playing as everyone loved rooting for the #15 seed underdog.

The Elite 8 was predicted perfectly, which was especially surprising considering that 3 out of the 4 games were upset victories. Louisville and Duke was the most talked about match-up, which was little surprise considering both teams have  arguably two of the most well known coaches in college basketball. Syracuse vs Marquette had the biggest margin of victory for Prime Buzz which was interesting to see since Marquette also had only 39 points in the Elite 8 loss. We’re excited to see what happens for the Final Four. Stay tuned for an updated bracket next week!
